Football: Still life left in Brewster

CRAIG BREWSTER proved there is life in the old dog yet when he came on as a substitute for Aberdeen in their 2-2 Scottish Cup draw with Hibs at Pittodrie in midweek.

Brewster may be a 40-year-old, but he still has a refreshing enthusiasm for the game - and it showed against the Edinburgh outfit.

He scored an excellent headed goal and, of course, set up the late leveller for Barry Nicholson.

I had Craig at Dunfermline and I can tell you he was a superb professional, a good trainer and a smashing bloke to have in the dressing room.

Actually, a lot of people were a little bit puzzled when he was allowed to leave East End Park to go to Inverness Caley Thistle a couple of years ago.

What a lot of folk won't realise is that Dunfermline desperately needed an injection of cash at the time and Caley Thistle actually paid pounds 60,000 for Craig.

That may not seem like a lot of money for the David Beckhams of this planet, but it was cash well received back then.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood deserves a fair bit of praise for taking on a guy who was manager of a rival SPL team at the start of the season.

And Calderwood also deserves a pat on the back for his tactical changes against Hibs. He went for a really adventurous 3-3-4 after the interval and they got a draw and the chance to fight another day.

It could easily have backfired spectacularly but he called it right. Well done, Jimmy!
