My son is in the sky.. he's calling me to come to him

Sunday Mirror,  Feb 11, 2007  by LEE BROWN in New York

TRAGIC Anna Nicole Smith revealed how she was haunted by nightmares of her dead son begging her to join him - just days before her death.

In what proved to be her last interview, the former Playboy model broke down when she spoke about losing her 20-year-old son Daniel to a drug overdose in September last year.

Daniel died in the same hospital room where she was recovering after giving birth to her daughter.

"I think of him every day and I dream of him every day and every night," she sobbed. "He comes to me in my sleep, he comes to me in the sky.

"It's like he's calling me to come to him. He looked like he was scared. Like he's scared and he wants me to come to him," she told an American TV news crew at her home in Bahamas.

Anna Nicole, 39 - who was found dead from a suspected drug overdose in a hotel room in Florida on Thursday - then became so distraught her boyfriend, lawyer Howard K Stern, called a halt to taping, asking the crew "Can we get some tissue?" Interviewer Mark Steines says she seemed to be "very under the influence of something" and was "very fragile" and "rambling".

Steines, who had interviewed her before, said: "This was not the same Anna Nicole. It was certainly taking its toll on her - and quickly."

But in happier moments during the interview for Entertainment Tonight, Anna Nicole spoke about her five- month-old daughter Dannielynn, now the centre of a pounds 274million paternity battle.

"She's very happy," she grinned. "She's so tall, she's really, really long, she's got really long fingers like mine, and she's really dainty. She's got my personality. She's very alert - she knows everything that is going on.

"She rolls over, she is very strong. She holds her head up, she tries to say a couple of words - she says mama and sometimes she can't say it and she'll be like 'mmammaam'."

Anna Nicole and Howard allowed the TV crew into their home to show how they were coping with ongoing legal battles as well as Dannielynn's arrival.

When she died she was battling to claim pounds 274m from the estate of her late husband, billionaire J Howard Marshall, 90. "I feel strong," she insisted. "Um, I'm tired, I'm really tired of the fight, but I'm not going to stop the fight until it's done."

Investigators are still probing the star's death in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Yesterday they said no drugs had been found in her stomach - but they were not ruling out that she died from an overdose. Authorities are waiting for results of various other toxicology tests. They are also interviewing members of the star's entourage and examining her medical records.

But Anna Nicole's mother Virgie Arthur said of her daughter's death: "I think she had too many drugs," Virgie said. "Just like Danny.

"I tried to warn her about drugs and the people she hung around... and she didn't listen. I told her when Daniel died, I told her then - I said you be very careful, baby, of who you hang with because you might be next. And now she's next."

In the interview, Anna Nicole branded her mother "evil" and insisted she hadn't seen Daniel since he was a baby. And she said she would make sure she never met Dannielynn, saying: "I'll not let my little girl know how evil my parents are."

Before her death Anna Nicole said her mother had starved her four children of love after their father, a police officer, left her when she was six months pregnant. She claimed they hadn't spoken in years.

Anna Nicole said she was devastated when she discovered her mother had visited Daniel's grave on what would have been his 21st birthday, saying: "It makes me sick to my stomach. I just I can't believe she had the nerve to lay her fat self on my son's grave." She snapped: "I don't know her." Then she added: "Let's just say, yeah, I do know how evil she is, so yeah. I just... what can you tell someone who is so evil and who doesn't care and doesn't even care for her own child. You can't..."

She spoke about Larry Birkhead's claims he is Dannielynn's father, denying they were ever in a relationship. She said: "He was my cameraman. I think he is after money and fame." She admitted that she has had miscarriages - "but not with him". And she insisted the only communication they have had has been him trying to woo her - or bombarding her with legal letters.

"Everything he does surprises me," she complained. "I mean he emails me love songs and tells me, 'Please come back home' - and then he turns around and he tells me, 'I want my attorney fees paid'."

She said: "Everyone in my life has stabbed me in my back, or said something bad about me, or sued me or blackmailed me for money.

"My whole life it's just been rough on me and so anyone who comes into my life I have them sign [a confidentiality agreement]. Everyone in my life signs one."

Asked why she was refusing to have a paternity test for her daughter, she said: "Why should I? It's crazy to me it's gone this far for him to go to a judge and say, 'Oh I want Anna Nicole Smith to take a paternity just because [she's] Anna Nicole Smith' and me have to do it."
