Football: Brown out of Faroes clash with leg injury

Sunday Mirror,  Jun 3, 2007  by RAY HEPBURN

CELTIC fans hoping to catch a glimpse of pounds 4.4million signing Scott Brown will have to wait until the start of the season.

The leg injury that he got in his final match for Hibs against his new club - two weeks ago - which kept him out of the win against Austria on Wednesday evening saw him withdraw last night from the trip to the Faroes.

The Scots make for unfashionable Toftir on Wednesday evening, seeking three points that will keep them in their unexpected position at the top end of their group.

Manager Alex McLeish has already ruled out Steven Pressley and Celtic striker Craig Beattie, while Lee McCulloch has stayed in Scotland for treatment and scans to see if he will be ready.

And there was bad news too from X-rays on Russell Anderson's ongoing hamstring problem.

While they did not show up any permanent damage, Anderson's is still ruled out.

McLeish said: "Russell was very keen to come back with us and it's pleasing to see that commitment and it's a disappointment that Scott has not made it, after the promise he showed in Italy "This will be a different game from the one in Austria.

"We are expected to win and that is a pressure that we have to deal with. We do not expect them to come out against us but we have to be careful about being too impatient because they are a side that will get every player behind the ball when they are under threat.

"This is a very awkward match and we must guard against being apprehensive. We have to be fully focused and show them respect otherwise we'll make it difficult for ourselves. But the players we have are certainly capable enough."
