Fishermen on brink
Sunday Mirror, Jan 13, 2008
IRELAND'S trawlermen are going through the worst start to a fishing season in DECADES.
Crippling fuel bills and rising overheads could even see some skippers packing in altogether.
And to make matter worse, gale-force winds and high tides have meant many boats have not even been to sea since before Christmas.
And with further bad weather forecasted, it could be several weeks before crews make a wage.
Fishing bosses are now urging banks and other lenders to take a sympathetic approach to the trawlermen's plight.
