OSPREYS 37
CONNACHT 7
MIKE Phillips got under Connacht's skin but proved a soothing sight for club and country as the Ospreys secured a much-needed bonus point win.
The Wales scrum-half scored his side's third try late on and helped set up a fourth for replacement Gareth Owen as the Magners League champions outclassed Connacht.
Phillips, who had been released by Wales coach Warren Gatland, also stayed out of harm's way ahead of the Italy match.
It was a routine win with Connacht's only joy an injury time try for Jonny O'Connor, converted by Tim Donnelly.
Shaun Connor had drilled two early penalties to put the Ospreys 6- 0 ahead, but the home side found greater difficulty in breaking down Connacht's disciplined defence.
Connacht's Andy Dunne was unable to slot either of his opening two penalty chances.
His side crumpled late in the half to concede two tries. Wing Nikki Walker - released back to the Ospreys by Scotland - spotted a gap from a ruck on the 10-metre line and rounded Brett Wilkinson.
Connor converted and then slotted the extras again moments later when the Filo Tiatia burst through two tackles before slipping the ball to his fellow former All Black Marty Holah to dive over.
Ahead 20-0 at the break, Connor's third penalty made things safe enough for the Ospreys at the start of the second-half.
Connacht's flagging cause was not helped when replacement forwards Colm Rigney and Connor O'Loughlin both took turns in the sin bin.
