GARDAI SINNK DVD PIRATES

GARDAI have busted a major EUR500,000 DVD counterfeiting operation which was flooding markets across the country with bogus movies.
The gang used 10 high-tech DVD copiers, 20 printers, 10 TV sets and 10 photocopy machines. The haul also included 30,000 counterfeit DVDs.
Sources said the movies - some of which are filmed inside cinemas - include many current blockbusters.
Last night officers raided a house in Balbriggan, Co Dublin. As well as the pirate haul, detectives seized two cars, although no arrests have been made.
The Irish Federation Against Copyright Theft said the pirates are costing the industry more than EUR200million a year. And the Government is missing out in taxes worth a further EUR100million.
One Garda insider said: "Some of these gangs are making more than EUR10million a year. It is as lucrative as the drugs trade but the risks are far lower.
"If you are caught with EUR10,000 worth of drugs, you are facing 10 years in jail. But EUR10,000 of fake DVDs will get you a fine.
"The quality of most of these copies is very poor and sometimes you can get the wrong movie."
Gardai said last night the operation was ongoing.
