Have a Deco

Sunday Mirror,  Apr 27, 2008  by JESSICA CONTOMICHALOS

WHEN Heather Johnstone and husband Glynn moved into their new bungalow they lost a poky utility room and gained a bathroom of their dreams.

The old bathroom went when they knocked it through to the kitchen. Then they extended a 10ft by 7ft utility room to 10ft by 13ft to give them scope to create a luxury bathroom.

Heather had her heart set on a clutter-free bathroom with clean lines and an Art Deco look. "I'm lucky because Glynn is in the property business and he was also able to enlist the services of a friend who's a qualified builder," says secretary Heather, 51.

"Glynn also helped with the labour to reduce the costs. The pipes were boxed in along a back wall and gave us a shelf for bits and pieces well as looking neater."

DREAM DESIGN

During a trawl around the DIY stores near their home in Walton- on-Thames, Surrey, they found the bathroom suite they wanted at Focus. "It had a large curved end and shower door that was perfect for my Art Deco theme, while a rounded more modern basin also gave the room a splash of contemporary style," she says.

Glynn, 65, built a small storage cupboard to fill in the gap between the end of the wall and the bath.

White wall tiles gave a feeling of space, while a row of square glass tiles picked out the black slate floor tiles and gave the room a flavour of the 1930s. A silver Venetian blind completed the look. The total bill including the extension was pounds 12,000.

"I love to come in here and light a few candles and sink into a glorious bubble bath it really is one of my favourite rooms," says Heather.
