Johnson 'dodgy' donation
Sunday Mirror, Apr 27, 2008 by ADRIAN BUTLER
ALAN Johnson received a "dodgy donation" from a middle-man, election watchdogs will confirm this week.
The pounds 3,334 gift to the Health Secretary will now be listed under the real donor's identity - Labour Party official Ahmed Yar.
The decision comes after we revealed how Mr Johnson had inadvertently breached election rules by accepting cash from a middle-man.
In January, we told how Mr Johnson took the cash for his failed campaign for Labour's deputy leadership from penniless immigrant Waseem Siddiqui.
We said Siddiqui, 50, was a "front" for his brother-in-law, Croydon Labour Party treasurer Yar.
The Electoral Commission will this week confirm our investigation and Yar's identity as the man behind the pounds 3,334 donation.
Siddiqui claimed he had no idea who Mr Johnson was and Yar asked him to write a blank cheque.
This is the second blow for Mr Johnson after the watchdog on Friday told him to return pounds 1,675 from Mirza Beg who was not registered to vote and so barred from being a donor.
He also has to pay the same amount into public funds. Mr Johnson insisted he was "100 per cent honest" and had done nothing wrong.
