'We've had caviar, champagne and oysters.. London belongs to Boris' -

Sunday Mirror,  May 4, 2008  by VINCENT MOSS

BORIS Johnson's first act as London mayor was to host a lavish champagne and caviar party.

The Tory MP ended the eight-year reign of Labour's Ken Livingstone shortly before midnight on Friday.

And minutes after his victory speech, a limo whisked Boris away to the exclusive Millbank Tower for a glitzy bash.

There he was joined by Tory leader and fellow Old Etonian David Cameron and other guests including composer Sir Tim Rice, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne, wealthy right-wing backers and Boris's wife Marina and their children.

Details of the victory party - dominated by a massive ice sculpture bearing Boris's name - were revealed by his sister Rachel. She said: "It's been champagne all night...oysters...caviar...it's been fantastic."

She added: "God knows who paid for it."

Ms Johnson confirmed that her brother was now quitting as Henley MP. "It's a safe seat," she said. "But, my God, he's got London. He doesn't need Henley any more. London belongs to him."

Writer Ms Johnson then went on to boast how she believed her brother could one day become PM.

"I don't think you can write him off as Prime Minister," she said. "As we were driving here tonight, we passed Downing Street and I said to my children, 'It's going to be City Hall one year and it might be Downing Street another year'."

Meanwhile, at Millbank Tower the revellers partied away long into the night. Dishevelled Boris did not emerge from his home until 11.15am yesterday to sign a declaration of office at City Hall.

Earlier, wife Marina had a Cherie Blair moment. Like Mrs Blair after Labour's 1997 election night party, she opened her front door in her nightclothes - and found herself captured by Press cameras.
