UTD WILL SCHO ALL THE WAY

Sunday Mirror,  May 4, 2008  by GERRY ARMSTRONG

MANCHESTER UNITED don't want to do anything the easy way this season.

Losing to Chelsea last week gave them a little boost in the Premier League title race but I can't see United slipping up.

Some may have thought that defeat would have rattled them ahead of the Champions League - not a chance.

Their performance was far from their best against a Barcelona team that flattered to deceive, but they did enough to get to their first Champions League final in nine years.

The big guns didn't fire for United, but Paul Scholes (below) pulled a large rabbit out of the hat to make sure he'd finally exorcise his ghost of 1999 when he was suspended for the dramatic win over Bayern Munich.

The all-English showpiece will take place after United have claimed the title, but I don't it'll make them favourites.

There is nothing to choose between Sir Alex Ferguson's men and Chelsea at the moment.

However, something tells me though, Fergie's drive to win Europe's biggest prize for a second time will see them home.

Regardless of what happens, Avram Grant has done enough to earn the fans' respect and at least another year in the job.

I doubted he had the tactical ability to get his side this far, but I hold my hands up and admit he's proved us wrong.

But who knows what owner Roman Abramovich will do. Chelsea have won two Premier League titles and been to three Champions League semis in the last four years under three managers.

So nothing is certain.
