EVERY DAY A SUNDAY

Sunday Mirror,  May 11, 2008  by KAREN ROCKET

VIVA London! The capital was warmer than most of Spain yesterday - and there's no sign of a cooling off yet.

Britain will be basking in a mini-heatwave for the next few days with temperatures hotting up to the 80s.

Yesterday was officially the hottest day of the year so far with the highest temperature recorded at 81F (27C) in London

But the warm, sunny weather across much of the UK is set to lead to the first summer smog, weather experts have warned.

High ozone levels are forecast for England and Wales today and tomorrow and the Environment Department is even urging people to take precautions, including avoiding exercise outdoors in the afternoon to reduce exposure to ozone.

It also wants us to avoid unnecessary short car journeys where possible, as the pollutants which cause ground-level ozone come from sources including petrol and other fuels.

The warm weather is expected to last at least until Wednesday, although there will be scattered, sharp showers in some places, according to MeteoGroup UK.

Flash floods hit south Wales overnight on Friday with up to an inch of rain falling in an hour. Emergency services were called out to pump out homes in Chepstow, Cardiff and Swansea as thunder storms struck overnight.

But while the west of the country had flash floods to deal with residents in Kent had another problem - mozzies!

They claimed to have seen clouds of mosquitoes swarming over homes and offices. The insects are breeding like crazy as the sun heats up salt water pools on the Pegwell and Sandwich Bay nature reserves.

The mosquitoes have been buzzing inland to feast in neighbouring towns and villages and Kent Wildlife Trust who look after the reserves are coming under fire for allowing them to flourish.
