CASEY Stoner battled his Ducati to pole position through driving rain for today's Czech Republic Moto GP at Brno.

"It was very cold but I must keep focused if I am going to retain my world crown," he said.

The Australian trails current title chase leader Valentino Rossi, who was second-fastest in qualifying by 25 points.

"I need to win, my lead is fragile," said the Fiat Yamaha rider.
