DEVASTATING bush fires were sweeping across California last night, burning up a mile of land every hour.
With 70mph winds whipping up the flames, thousands of people risked losing their homes.
More than 1,000 firemen were fighting the blazes, and an area of at least four square miles had so far been destroyed in and around Santa Barbara.
