FREAK storms brought floods to Britain yesterday - with some areas left under 4ft of water.

Hundreds of homes were flooded and scores of drivers stranded when roads became rivers in the West Country.

In Dorset a 22-year-old woman died when her car crashed in heavy rain. An inch of hail fell in HAYLE, Cornwall.

In Somerset a coastguard helicopter helped rescue families after the River Cale burst its banks at Wincanton.

The Environment Agency issued 247 flood warnings with a severe warning for Gloucestershire.

In Berkshire, westbound trains halted at Reading and in London buses replaced the Stansted Airport Express as a tree fell on the line.

Floods also hit Wiltshire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands and North Wales. And flood watches were mounted in Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

EIGHT inches of snow hit the US states of Louisiana and Mississippi yesterday.
