POGUES frontman Shane MacGowan is set to make a killing from top US cop show The Wire - which features several of his best songs.

The cult TV show based in Baltimore, Maryland, uses several of MacGowan's favourite songs at key points during the show.

In several scenes when a cop dies, his body is taken to the pub where his former comrades sing MacGowan's 1986 masterpiece "Body of an American".

In another scene, Etoneducated Dominic West, who plays the show's hero Detective Jimmy McNulty, crashes his car into a bridge after a night's drinking.

As his car loses control on the corner, the Pogues song Sally McLennane is blaring from the stereo.

One showbiz insider told the Irish Sunday Mirror: "Shane is going to make a killing from The Wire.

"Apart from the royalties he is also getting a host of new fans from the show.

"His music appears all over the place during the five series. The Wire is massive across the globe.

"The Wire might not have won too many awards, but it is the best show on the box and Irish viewers are definitely missing out."
