Philippines Globe Telecom to invest $750 million in cellular

Globe Telecom Inc., a joint venture company between the Ayala group and SingTel, has earmarked 39.82 billion ($750 million) to upgrade and expand its GSM network. Upon completion, slated for the end of 2003, the company's total capacity will more than double to over 7 million subscribers.
The expansion will include installation of 1,000 new cell sites, 37 new base stations and 17 mobile switching centers. The supplier of the equipment has not been determined and negotiations are underway with leading companies including Nokia and Ericsson.
