The lights all lead to an extension cord plugged into an outdoor outlet on the house. Prussin figures it costs him $1 a day in electricity to run the lights.

Prussin recommends the following sources of succulent plants:

Plant Delights Nursery, Raleigh, N.C., (919) 772-4794; www.plantdelights.com; Intermountain Cactus, Kaysville, Utah, (801) 546-2006; YuccaDo Nursery, Hempstead, Texas, (979) 826-4580,

The Cactus and Succulent Society of America. Its Web site is www.cssainc.org/index.html

Prussin also recommends "Growing Winter Hardy Cacti in Cold/Wet Climate Conditions," a booklet by John N. Spain published in 1997. It is available for $15 by writing to Spain at 69 Bayberry Road, Middlebury, Conn. 06762.
