SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -- Authorities say an inert military training device packed in a piece of checked luggage caused a bomb scare Tuesday morning at San Francisco International Airport.

United Airlines flights were delayed, and Terminal 3 gates 71 and 76 were closed, at about 7:15 a.m. after the suspect luggage was flagged by a 3-D baggage-scanning machine, said SFO spokesman Mike McCarron.

The United Airlines VIP lounge, on an upper floor directly above the area where the bag was flagged, was evacuated during the incident.

Normal airport operations resumed around 9:45 a.m., after the bomb squad deemed the device harmless, McCarron said. The squad used a remote-control robot to investigate the bag.

McCarron said at least 29 United Airlines flights were delayed because of the incident. The average delay was 30 minutes.
