OAKLAND -- Councilmember Frank Matarrese put off seeking a seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors for now to focus on re- election to the Alameda City Council.

Matarrese said his Island supporters expressed a need for his continued leadership on large issues facing the city, including the conveyance of the base from the Navy, the Alameda Theater project and improvements of the commercial Webster and Park streets.

He had announced his candidacy in August for the board's District 3 seat currently occupied by Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker. The third district represents Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Ashland and the San Antonio and Chinatown districts of Oakland.

Including the incumbent, other announced candidates are San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young, San Leandro Councilmember Glenda Nardine and Alameda businessman Jim Price.
