Citys downtown plans need ideas
Oakland Tribune, May 28, 2006 by ,
SAN LEANDRO -- Attention residents and business owners: The city wants your input on the future development of downtown at an upcoming community meeting.
Participants can learn about development potential for the area, assist in shaping the vision of downtown San Leandro, and help enhance the living, dining and shopping experience there.
Earlier this year, the City Council created a 27-member citizen advisory committee to develop a strategy for transit-oriented development in San Leandros downtown.
As part of that effort, the first of two meetings to gather community ideas on the project is being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday inside the cafeteria at Bancroft Middle School, 1150 Bancroft Ave.
According to Jane McCrea, the citys public information officer, community members will be introduced to the concepts and strategy efforts of transit-oriented development, including presentations on existing conditions and a market analysis for the area.
The meeting will provide the public an opportunity to give feedback on the reports, as well as the overall project. An-other meeting is planned for July to discuss development ideas in more detail.
San Leandro received a $450,000 planning grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for this purpose and is one of eight cities in the region to receive this special grant, McCrea said.
At the Saturday meeting, free child care will be available with the assistance of the city recreation departments Kids Club. Spanish translation also will be provided, and lunch will be served.
For more information or to use the child care services while attending the meeting, RSVP to Nina Hinton, in the citys Community Development Department, at (510) 577-3415.
