Last chance to get tickets for banquet

THE deadline for purchasing tickets for the 18th annual San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet is noon Monday.

The 6:30 p.m. event at the San Mateo Elks Lodge will honor 10 new members of the Hall of Fame.

They are: Bob Adams, Terry Christman, Keith Comstock, Marte Formico, Patty Elsener Homan, Rudy Law, Sammy Reynoso, Kim Terrell, Peter Tuipulotu and Bill Wilkin.

In addition, the evening will be dedicated to the memory of the late Kelly Shea Gallo, the Mills High School women's basketball coach who died of cancer two years ago.

The banquet is presented by The Times and is sponsored by the First National Bank of Northern California. Proceeds benefit the county's History Museum in Redwood City.

Tickets at $50 apiece are still available at the newspaper. Call Dottie Burdine at (650) 348-4332 for information.

BANANA SLUGS -- You have to love anything connected with an outfit dubbed The Banana Slug String Band.

That group, along with several others, will be performing next weekend, June 24-25, at the La Honda Faire & Music Festival, beginning at 10 a.m. each day.

The event, which includes artwork, crafts, food and other diversions, will benefit La Honda Elementary School, one of the smallest public schools in the county with fewer than 100 students.

The festival will be held at La Honda Gardens adjacent to the La Honda Center, 8865 La Honda Road, off Highway 84. Admission, as always, is free.

PAYING FOR GAS -- In spite of severe challenges facing the entire commercial airline business here, some employees maintain a sense of humor.

As a commuter flight from Orange County to SFO prepared to taxi out to the runway the other day, the United Airlines flight attendant chirped, "OK, we've got the gas, now who's going to pay for it? Anybody got a credit card?"

None of the passengers volunteered. The flight was uneventful.

BRISK BIDDING -- Also in Orange County, the celebrity lure of ex- San Matean Tom Brady persists.

Although the quarterback of the New England Patriots couldn't lead his team to a fourth National Football League title in five years, one of his signed footballs sold for $1,000 at a Yorba Linda Catholic elementary school auction last month.

The bidding, reportedly, was brisk.

GERI LEPELTAK -- Good to see Pacifica's Geri Lepeltak recovering well from recent surgery at Burlingame's Peninsula Medical Center. In her youth as Geri Wheeler, she was one of the county's earliest and best female softball pitchers. Great to have her back on track over on the Coastside. Let's see that rise ball one more time.

Got a hot local tip or a Peninsula vignette you'd like to share? Don't hesitate. Send it along to John Horgan by telephone at (650) 348-4334, by fax at (650) 348-4446 or by traditional snail mail at P.O. Box 5400, San Mateo, CA 94402.
