Beef up security

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Aug 25, 2006

PEOPLE WHO bike and take Amtrak have a huge problem: bicycle theft.

On Aug. 16, my bicycle seat was stolen for the second time in two weeks at the Centerville train station.

After the first theft, I put a quarter-inch steel lock through my new seat. But they cut through the cable to steal the seat.

People who bike are trying to save gas and preserve the environment. But there are no bike lockers or security at the Centerville train station.

I looked through the Centerville OIC Web-cams to see if any of the video shows the seat being stolen, but neither cam shows the bicycle area or parking lots.

Why are there no bike lockers at the Centerville train station?

And why aren't the Web-cams pointed toward areas that might help identify theft on the premises?

A lot of people take Amtrak and ACE trains. It's time for something to be done about the lack of security at the Centerville station.
