"In the context of the holidays, I think it's important to look at all the decisions you make with cutting down trees," she said, such as paper used for cards and wrapping gifts. People can instead use recycled wrapping paper, send e-cards or make a donation to a tree-planting organization, she said, to offset any concerns about cutting a Christmas tree.

For her, the live tree provides a connection to nature that an artificial tree can't. "It's a very old holiday that is a reminder of the need for lightness in our dark time," Slater said, which the live evergreen tree provides.
