Juvenile Hall medical bid approved

Oakland Tribune,  Mar 29, 2007

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday awarded a contract for health care services at the county's new juvenile detention facility to Children's Hospital Oakland.

Children's Hospital Oakland's bid for the one-year contract at the San Leandro facility came in at $2.8 million, the amount requested by the county.

The county's hospital system, the Alameda County Medical Center, currently runs health services at Juvenile Hall. It's bid for the contract came in at $4.9 million.

The supervisors' decision to switch providers came over objections by physicians and nurses at Juvenile Hall, who said that they had more experience treating incarcerated youth than Children's Hospital Oakland.

Only Supervisor Nate Miley voted against awarding the contract to Children's Oakland, citing concerns raised by the medical providers.

The new $176 million Juvenile Justice Center is slated to open in April and will include expanded medical and mental health services.
