Jazz great Andrew Hill dies
Oakland Tribune, Apr 20, 2007 by Jim Harrington -
Great pianist Andrew Hill, known for such classic jazz albums as "Point of Departure" and "Passing Ships," died today, following a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He was 75.
His death was made public by an announcement from Blue Note Records, the legendary jazz label that signed Hill back in 1963. Upon coming to Blue Note, the label founder Alfred Lion pronounced that Hill was destined to become ``the next Thelonious Monk.'' The pianist, who has also highly regarded as a composer, maintained a 44- year relationship with Blue Note.
That stay included such early career highlights as ``Black Fire'' and ``Lift Every Voice'' as well as 2006's ``Time Lines,'' which Ben Ratliff of the New York Times named as the best jazz album of the year
