REINALDO FRANCISCO GOMEZ
Born on June 20, 1945, in Havana, Cuba, the only child of Mimi and Reinaldo Gomez, passed away after a courageous struggle with acute myelogeneous leukemia on June 8, 2007. Rey emigrated to Miami, Florida in 1960, where he met his future wife, Alina. He went to the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he received his BS and MS. He then moved to Boston, MA where he continued his graduate studies at MIT, completing his PhD. There he became a professor and taught and did research for 8 years. Moving his family to San Mateo, he worked at Genentech for 10 years where he became Vice President of Research. He continued his distinguished career at Telik Inc, as VP of Product Development, where he pioneered the development of cancer treating drugs.
Rey had a passion for fly-fishing in the Sierras, international travel, salsa dancing with his wife, ancient Roman culture, and loved following the Red Sox and the 49ers. Oddly enough, he also loved the Red Sox's rivals, the New York Yankees, because as a boy in Cuba, he would listen to the radio broadcasts of their games. He had a quick wit and a wry sense of humor and had an affecting gift for public speaking. Rey instilled a sense of integrity, ambition and honesty in his kids and all those who met him. He was the kind of man who would declare socks he bought in Italy to Customs officials.
Rey is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, his three children, Natalie, Andrew and Alex, his son in law, Paul, his grandson, Noah Francisco, his mother, Mimi Gomez, his uncle and aunt, Dr. Carlos Llanes and Marta Llanes, and his cousins, Chuck Llanes, Patty Fiedler, Mimi Frazier, Diana Bassett, Frank Gomez and Hope Irizar.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate and honor his life will be held on June 16, 2007 at 10am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 1040 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, PO Box 4072 Pittsfield, MA 01202 or at www.leukemia-lymphoma.org Crippen & Flynn Carlmont Chapel
