San Carlos suffers first league defeat

SAN CARLOS -- San Carlos is no longer the only undefeated team in the Peninsula Joe DiMaggio League.
Millbrae-Burlingame made certain of that last Friday at Burton Park. Exploding for five runs in the top of the first inning, Millbrae-Burlingame cruised to an 8-4 win and improved to 8-2. San Carlos (11-1) remains in first place of the South Division.
Danny McCarthy brought home the first run of Millbrae- Burlingame's big first-inning rally on an RBI double to center. Mark Hoem followed with a run-scoring single, then No.5 batter Sebastian Camard delivered the haymaker -- a three-run home run over the left- field fence.

"I thought it was going to go off the fence,'cause it was just a line drive," Camard said. "It was really important that we jump ahead, because they are undefeated in league, and we've been losing to a few teams that we shouldn't have in doubleheaders."
Nik Jurado made certain that his team's 5-0 lead would stick. Jurado went the distance with six strikeouts.
Of course, getting added run support never hurts, and Jurado had plenty. McCarthy hit his double in the third, and eventually scored on an error. Moments later, catcher Tony Loeffler hit an RBI double down the left-field line for a 7-1 lead
Still, San Carlos had several opportunities to get back into the game, yet consistently fell short. The home team managed to loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first when Jurado got a comebacker, threw to catcher Tony Loeffler for the force play, then he went to first for the double play.
"Obviously, that's a killer," San Carlos coach Tony Scoma said. "Their pitcher threw real well tonight, and our guys did all right, it's just they weren't hitting."
Jared Hopper continued his hot hitting for San Carlos, going 3- for-4 with a double. Leadoff batter Tony Cooper hit a third-inning RBI double and finished with three hits. San Carlos cut the gap to 7- 4 after the fifth, yet ended up stranding six baserunners.

The San Mateo Orioles (9-9, 5-2) hit three home runs, including two from Alex Augustyn, in a 13-1 win over Half Moon Bay at Aragon High.
Augustyn belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, then went a step further with a three-run shot. Augustyn had game highs in hits (three) and RBIs (six).
Brett Montague ripped a fifth-inning two-run home run and had three RBIs. Pierson Jeremiah had two hits and two RBIs.
Elsewhere, Kevin Hahn doubled home two runs, and Andrew Suvunnachuen had a game-high three hits in Burlingame's 6-4 victory over Los Altos. Pitchers AJ Baylock, Dominic Mutto and Matt Chavez teamed to allow just four hits as Burlingame improved its league record to 4-4 (5-4 overall).
