Road cleared after big-rig accident on I-580 in Livermore

Oakland Tribune, Jun 26, 2007 by Roman Gokhman

The CHP reports that all lanes are cleared on Interstate Highway 580 in Livermore after a multi-vehicle accident blocked three of four lanes eastbound near Vasco Road.

The crash, which occurred at 8:45 a.m., had only minor injuries, but was expected to impact traffic until 11:30 a.m.

A Saturn and a flat-bed truck collided, causing a trailing big- rig truck to jackknife. The big-rig blocked three lanes, and 40 gallons of diesel spilled onto the road, California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Creel said.

That section of the freeway has four lanes and an auxiliary lane for the Vasco Road on-ramp, Creel said.

Three minor injuries were reported to the people inside the Saturn, Creel said. They were taken to an area hospital.

"If it were not for the diesel spill, the (road) would have opened in an hour or less," Creel said.
