'Before the generic'

"Right now, we're trying to have the Altamont Pass declared a historical corridor," he says. "I really enjoy this; I enjoy discovering stuff that others are interested in, but may not have the time to research or search them out for themselves."

Throughout its length, the highway serves up large doses of history and romance to anyone willing to spend time on the old two- lane.

"What you get is an America from before the generic that begins when you get off the off-ramp," says Wallis.

"I don't want to over-romanticize this trip, because you can run into all kinds of problems. But you do see the real thing, where nothing is instant but the service, and the pie you eat for dessert was baked that morning by the same woman who is serving it to you."
