Haas School's dean to resign

BERKELEY -- Tom Campbell, dean of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, announced Monday that he will step down next summer.

Campbell, a former congressman, state senator and California finance director, said he will announce his plans after leaving on July 15. He declined to elaborate on his future Monday. He has been credited with improving the school's national rankings and fund raising.

Deans typically serve for five years, although Campbell's term was interrupted in 2004 when he left Haas for a year in December 2004 to serve as state finance director for a year.

"The chancellor asked if I wanted to be considered for another five years, and I said, 'no,'" Campbell said.

He became the Haas School's 13th dean in August 2002. The university will conduct a national search for a replacement over the next few months.

"Tom Campbell has shown exceptional leadership as dean of the Haas School by steadily increasing its reputation ... so that it clearly ranks among the top business schools nationally and internationally," UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said in a release.
