UNION CITY - A 55-year-old Hayward man, Marcus Padilla, died Tuesday evening after his 2001 Ford Taurus was struck by an SUV at the intersection of Whipple Road and Central Avenue, police said.

Padilla initially was taken by ambulance to a local trauma center, but he later succumbed to his wounds, Sgt. Gloria Lopez- Vaughan said.

Police on Wednesday said they are still investigating the 4 p.m. crash, but said that it appears that Padilla was making an illegal U- turn at the intersection when his vehicle was struck by a Ford Excursion.

A 32-year-old Union City woman driving the Excursion suffered only minor injuries.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said.

Anyone with information may call police at 510-471-1365.
