Bonds still can have Giant role

Oakland Tribune,  Sep 28, 2007  by Andrew BaggarlySTAFF

LOS ANGELES -- Barry Bonds still has a future contract with the Giants, even if it's not the kind he wanted.

Bonds holds a 10-year personal services contract with the club, which was tacked onto the five-year, $90million extension he signed after the record-setting 2001 season.

But the language is vaguely worded, and Bonds could decide to void the deal entirely, Giants executive vice president Larry Baer said.

"We purposely left it vague to see where everybody's mind is," Baer said. "Does he want to help players? Does he want to be part of community outreach? It's not determined.

"We don't know the circumstances once he retires. Maybe we tear it up. I don't know."

The contract is set to begin whenever Bonds walks away from the game -- something he isn't ready to do yet. It's been reported that the Bonds Family Foundation would receive $1 million each year of the deal; Baer said the actual figures are a little lower.

Asked about the personal services deal, Bonds said Saturday that he would maintain a close relationship with the franchise after he retires.

"I will always be close," he said. "This is where I was raised. This is where I'm from."

BONDS' FAREWELL: Bonds did not acknowledge fans with any words during his farewell game Wednesday night. But if he had asked for a microphone and a few minutes after the sixth inning, the San Diego Padres wouldn't have objected.

Padres manager Bud Black said Baer paid him a visit prior to the game, and Black gave the team carte blanche to handle Bonds' exit.

"He told us there might be a little bit of a delay," Black said. "I told him, 'Take all the time you need. However Barry wants to come out of the game is fine with me.' We were aware with what was going on and were fine with everything."

After Bonds flied out to the warning track in the sixth inning, he hugged Jake Peavy as the pitcher walked off the mound. Then he pointed into the Padres dugout at Black, who was his teammate in 1993 and'94 -- the slugger's first two seasons in San Francisco.

SHORT HOPS: With their victory Wednesday, the Padres took two of three to capture yet another series win over the Giants. San Diego won each of the six three-game series between the clubs and won the season series 14-4. It's the most losses the Giants have suffered to one opponent since 1985, when they were 3-15 against the Houston Astros. ... If shortstop Omar Vizquel played his final game as a Giant in San Francisco, he was deprived a hero's salute. Bochy sent up Ray Durham to pinch hit for the 11-time Gold Glove winner in the fifth inning. Vizquel is a free agent this season and wishes to return, but the Giants haven't spoken to him about a new contract yet.
