SHP turns on the jets in 2nd half vs. Carmel

The Sacred Heart Prep football team was so successful with the run that it opted not to attempt a pass in its 54-38 non-league win over Carmel.
SHP (6-1) rushed for 325 yards on 35 carries. Giordano Capovilla led the way with 158 yards on only eight carries. He scored on touchdown runs of 59 and 55 yards. Matt Walter gained 113 yards on 15 carries and scored four touchdowns.
Carmel (5-2) led 32-21 in the third quarter, but a 70-yard kickoff return by Matt Bocci ignited an SHP comeback.
College football
Menlo College (1-7, 1-3) scored on an interception and a fumble return to take a 14-10 lead, but saw Willamette dominate the line of scrimmage the rest of the way of a 32-14 Northwest Conference victory.

Cross country
The Carlmont boys placed ninth in the individual sweepstakes race at the Mt. SAC Invitational.
Brad Surh led the Scots by taking 22nd in 15 minutes, 57 seconds on the 3-mile course. Austin Logie was right behind, taking 24th in 16:00. Chris Pedro was 42nd in 16:36 and Sean Callahan 49th in 16:47. Chris Chow was 89th (17:31) and Dan Palladino 90th (17:33).
The Carlmont girls placed eighth in the super sweepstakes race. Hayley Pascale took 31st in 18:32. Justine Fedronic was 34th (18:41), Mary Rhoades 49th (19:07), Jessie Peterson 52nd (19:14), Georgia Cottong 58th (19:27) and Tamara Abinader 66th (19:47).
Also at Mt. SAC, the Menlo-Atherton boys placed fourth and the Westmoor boys 14th.
Menlo-Atherton's Andy Del Calvo placed 11th in 16:50. Sophomore Joe Ocon was 29th (17:19), Jeff Hester 34th (17:24), Ryan Scandlyn 44th (17:42) and Adin Vaesworn 45th (17:42).
Westmoor freshman Steve Mandan was 27th (17:19) and David Urista 47th (17:46). They were followed by Bobby Chen (86th, 18:41), Samier Said (87th, 18:42) and David Galo (89th, 18:42).
Water polo
Sacred Heart Prep took fifth and Menlo School won the consolation championship of the North-South Tournament.
The Gators (17-2) beat St. Francis 13-5 then defeated Miramonte 9- 6 in the fifth-place game. Paul Rudolph led the way offensively with six goals. Michael Wishart had 11 saves.
Menlo (15-4) beat Northwood 6-5 and then defeated Carlsbad 5-4 for the consolation title.
