SAN LEANDRO _ An unidentified man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in San Leandro at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The man had apparently been talking on his cell phone and had walked around the crossing signal arms at Alvarado Street when he was struck by the train traveling at 79 miles per hour, according to Union Pacific special agent Curt Rothacker.

San Leandro police officers had seen the man earlier in the day walking around downtown San Leandro wearing a distinctive multicolor hat with spider-like arms, but said they had not seen him in town before.

This afternoon, investigators were examining the multicolor hat which still lay next to the tracks. The man's body was about 50 meters away surrounded by police behind police tape as they waited for the coroner to arrive.
