LIVERMORE -- More than 80 people were arrested Friday morning while protesting at the gates of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

About 300 people, many affiliated with various religious organizations, took part in the annual Good Friday event to protest the lab's involvement in weapons development. The day's protest included sermons and liturgy and was followed by the arrest of nonviolent protesters who chose to be arrested for refusing to leave the laboratory grounds.

Livermore Lab officials reported that 83 people were arrested. There were 64 arrests last year.

Marylia Kelley, executive director of the Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment lab watchdog group, said she believed there were as many as 91 arrests this year.

Those arrested were cited and released.
