Fremont police investigate beating at DeVry University

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 5, 2008  by Ben Aguirre Jr

FREMONT -- Police on Friday continued to investigate a gang- related beating in which at least one student at DeVry University was attacked with a baseball bat, an assault likely linked to a fight that happened at the campus days earlier, officials said.

Fremont police and the Southern Alameda County Gang Violence Suppression Task Force on Friday were looking for three men who went to the school about 9 p.m. Thursday, shouted gang-related slurs and then attacked a student with a baseball bat, Detective Bill Veteran said.

Witnesses told police that the men -- who fled in a large burgundy SUV -- came to the Ardenwood campus, located off Highway 84 just west of Ardenwood Boulevard, and attacked one student.

The assailants also may have stabbed another person, witnesses told police.

"All I can confirm at this time is that one student was hit with a baseball bat," Veteran said, noting that the police report had not been completed because the case was under investigation.

Initial reports did not indicate any serious injuries, he said, although an ambulance was dispatched to the school to treat the assault victim.

No details were available on the fight that happened earlier in the week.
