Montana seeks to motivate Hayward

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 8, 2008  by Matt O'Brien

HAYWARD -- Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana will keynote an economic summit Thursday in Hayward.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, now an entrepreneur who has been eyeing a Mission Boulevard property for redevelopment, will give a motivational speech about "building a winning team."

He will be joined by economist Bill Watkins, executive director of the Economic Forecast Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and other experts, business leaders and local officials talking about state, regional and local trends.

This is the first such summit that the city has hosted, but David Korth, Hayward's neighborhood and economic development manager, said officials hope to make it an annual event.

"The main gist is to convey to businesses and real estate brokers ... the various opportunities to establish and expand businesses in Hayward," Korth said.

The morning-long summit begins at 7 a.m. Thursday in the Valley Business and Technology Presentation Center at California State University, East Bay, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., in Hayward. Space is limited and tickets cost $50.

Other local business happenings this week: On Wednesday, the Hayward Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Hayward Business Expo and Community Showcase from 3 to 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall, 22292 Foothill Blvd. Tickets cost $10 and will be available at the door.
