Democratic state Assembly hopefuls ready to debate

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 13, 2008  by Will Oremus

The three Democratic candidates to succeed Gene Mullin, D-South San Francisco, in the state Assembly will face off in a Tuesday debate.

The San Mateo event, sponsored by the Beresford/Hillsdale Neighborhood Association, is intended to give voters a feel for the candidates' stances on key local and state issues.

Mullin will be termed out at the end of this year, opening the door for a hotly contested primary race between three locally prominent Democrats.

Richard Holober, board president of the San Mateo County Community College District, is running to the left, banking on support from unions such as the California Teachers Association, which endorsed him last week.

Jerry Hill, a San Mateo County supervisor, is a former Republican whose work since switching parties has earned him the backing of some of the county's most prominent Democratic officials, including Mullin himself.

Millbrae Mayor Gina Papan, whose father Lou Papan was a longtime state legislator, is focusing on health care and schools and has the support of state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo.

All three have raised more than $100,000 for their campaigns.

Tuesday's debate will start at 7:45 p.m. at the Beresford Recreation Center, on the corner of Alameda de las Pulgas and 28th Avenue in San Mateo.
