CV roars backs, 12-0 in HAAL

Oakland Tribune,  May 7, 2008  by Anonymous

HAYWARD -- The Castro Valley High softball team clinched at least a share of the Hayward Area Athletic League and remained undefeated in HAAL play Tuesday by defeating a feisty Tennyson squad 8-2.

The Trojans can clinch the HAAL title outright and the automatic berth for the North Coast Section playoffs with a win over San Leandro on Thursday.

Despite the final score, Tuesday's win wasn't easy for the Trojans.

After allowing just two total runs in its first 12 HAAL contests, Castro Valley was in unfamiliar territory, trailing 2-0 entering the fourth inning as Tennyson's Jennifer Reynoso and JoJo Pacheco hit solo home runs off Trojans ace Jessica Lemmon.

"After that, we really were fired up against them, and they were a little shook up being down," Tennyson coach Hugh Lenehan said.

But in just one swing of the bat the Trojans got back into the game, as catcher Monica Ammerman hit a two-run homer off Shannon Merritt to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth.

Castro Valley would add two more in the fifth on a two-run triple by Brittany Sanchez and three more in the sixth.

After the two early home runs, Lemmon allowed just a single the rest of the game, finishing with a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts while walking six.

Merritt pitched well for Tennyson despite allowing eight runs. Only four runs were earned, and she struck out five and walked none.

BASEBALL

CASTRO VALLEY -- Castro Valley's Justin Calestini threw a no- hitter in the Trojans' 14-0 shellacking of Tennyson in HAAL action.

Calestini kept the Lancers bats off-balanced all game, allowing a pair of walks and striking out five.

He was backed by Mike Pepoon and Tim Lee. Pepoon went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs. Lee added a triple and drove in two more.

The Trojans improved to 7-6 in HAAL and 9-12 overall in beating the Lancers (0-14, 0-12).
