Army National Guard Pfc. Dale L. Baxley recently graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Baxley graduated from James Logan High School in 1985, and received a bachelor's degree in 2001 from then-Cal State Hayward.

Kidango, a large nonprofit organization providing quality early care and other support services to children and families in Alameda, Santa Clara and San Francisco counties, recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jacob Eapen to its board of directors.

Eapen is a paeditrician with the Alameda County Health Services.

He is also on the Washington Hospital Board of Directors.

At the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks' 144th Grand Lodge Convention on July 6-10 in Anaheim, Ian H. Lanouette of Fremont Elks Lodge No. 2121 was installed as the new leader of the Bay District of the California Elks Association.

As the Elks national representative for the area, Lanouette will be responsible for working with local Elks Lodges to fulfil the order's commitment to promote charity and patriotism in their communities.

In the position of district deputy grand exalted ruler, Lanouette's duties will include advising lodges on important internal and business matters, reviewing how national policy is implemented by district lodges, and assisting in the coordination and supervision of Elks' activities on many levels.

Army Pvt. Wiley J. Montgomery has graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is the son of Johnny Montgomery of Newark.

The private is a 2003 graduate of Newark Memorial High School.

Two local men, Navy Seaman Mark V. Grande and Navy Seaman Apprentice Cody A. Hernandez, were recently promoted to their current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

They both received early promotion for outstanding performances during all phases of the training cycle.

Grande, son of George and Diane Grande of Union City, is a 2003 graduate of James Logan High School.

Hernandez is a 2007 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.

Stefanie M. Barnes of Union City has been awarded a Foundation Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The Foundation Leadership Award is a one-year award of $1,000 to be applied toward residence hall fees and designed for out-of-state students who have demonstrated leadership, scholarship and involvement.

Barnes, the daughter of Steve and Lynn Barnes of Union City, is a 2008 graduate of James Logan High School.

Air Force Master Sgt. Edith D. Davis has retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of military service.

Before retiring, Davis served as superintendent of the wing executive staff for the 59th Medical Wing at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The master sergeant is the niece of Ernest and Lupita Angst of Fremont.

She graduated from Mission San Jose High School in 1988, and in 2001 received an associate's degree in applied science from Community College of the Air Force, headquartered at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

Her husband, Robbie, is from San Antonio.
