Residents to vote on special ballot measure

On Nov. 4, Concord residents will be voting on a special ballot measure that asks voters to decide if the City Clerk position, which is currently elected, should be appointed.

Arguments in favor or against the measure must be submitted to the City Clerk by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at 1950 Parkside Drive. The statement can not exceed 300 words in length and must be submitted in a typed or word-processed block format in a standard upper and lower case style.

Rebuttal arguments are allowed and may not exceed 250 words. Rebuttal arguments must be filed no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 15.

Pursuant to Section 9287 of the Election Code, one argument for and one argument against the measure may be selected for printing and distribution to voters with the sample ballot.

Registration open for adult softball league

Team registration is currently being accepted for Concord fall softball leagues. The registration deadline is Aug. 11. The fall league starts in September and runs through October.

Men's, women's and co-ed divisions are offered on various nights throughout the week, Sunday through Friday.

Concord is also again offering a men's E-League and a strictly recreational league for the co-ed division designed for teams with little or no experience that are looking to play in a completely noncompetitive environment.

Registration and information packets are available at Willow Pass Community Center, 2748 E. Olivera Road, online at www.cityofconcord.org/softball or by calling the adult sports office at 925-671-3279 to receive the packet by mail. To join a team, call the adult sports office to be placed on the free agent list.

Prepare for SAT test at library events

Representatives from Kaplan are offering a free workshop to help students prepare for the SAT test. Parents are welcome to attend. Registration is required.

Students will take a practice test at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8 and then return for scores and a strategy follow-up session at 6 p.m. Thursday 14. Both sessions are held at the Concord Library, 2900 Salvio St.

Sunvalley concerts continue in Grand Court

Sunvalley Shopping Center is hosting a concert series from 7 to 8 p.m. every Friday in the Grand Court through Aug. 29. Admission is free to all concerts.

Clayton scavenger hunt has Olympic flair

The Mt. Diablo Region YMCA and Modern Day Treasure Hunters is sponsoring a GPS-led scavenger hunt from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Clayton Library.

Using a GPS unit, families and groups can walk trails and look for "clues" along different routes. Each route provides facts and information about the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The cost is $7 per person, children 2 and younger are free. Participants can bring their own GPS or rent one for $5. Instruction on how to use the GPS is provided, and groups can begin their hunt anytime during a three-hour period.

Nominations sought for heroes awards program

The American Red Cross Bay Area is seeking nominations for its annual heroes awards program. The program celebrates the community's everyday heroes, recognizing individuals and organizations who make a difference through acts of extraordinary kindness and courage. All nominees must work or reside in Contra Costa County. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, Aug. 15.

The heroes will be honored Friday, Oct. 17 at Scott's Restaurant and Garden in Walnut Creek.

Heroes can be nominated for one of the following categories:

-- Life Saving Hero: An adult or youth who has performed an extraordinary life-saving act, using life-saving skills such as CPR or first aid.

-- Act of Courage Hero: An adult or youth who has performed an extraordinary act of courage.

-- Act of Kindness and Philanthropy Hero: An adult or youth who has shown an extreme act of kindness or selflessness.

-- Community Service Hero, Individual: An adult or youth who has performed great community service.

-- Community Service Hero, Organization: A business or organization that has performed great community service.

-- Animal Rescue Hero: An animal that has protected a human in a time of need or a person who has rescued an animal from a traumatic situation.

Nominations may be submitted online at www.redcrossbayarea.org/ heroes. Forms are available at the Concord Training Center, 1300 Alberta Way, by calling 415-427-8170 or e-mailing siegeldo@usa.redcross.org.

Red Cross volunteer orientation planned

Residents are invited to learn about American Red Cross programs and services as well as volunteer opportunities during an orientation from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 1300 Alberta Way, Concord.
