Against bailout

Oakland Tribune, Sep 26, 2008 by Letter to the Editor

I oppose the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street. They have been attacking the American people for 30 years by way deregulation and a "profits over people" mentality.

They have insisted that we as a nation cannot afford a national health insurance program and American corporations cannot afford our pension system.

The rich in this country, including Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson have insisted that the free market system is the only viable form of capitalism we should embrace, that the government should stay out of it's way, mind its own business.

They have demanded tax cuts in their favor, while we watch our infrastructure crumble, war costs mount and programs to help poor people crushed.

Now they want us to pay for their treachery? I plead with the Democrats in Congress to say no, to find a way of helping homeowners stay in their homes without this capitulation.

It will be the end of the republic when the government decides it will only help the rich and not the middle class and poor.
