Pittsburg steel mill laying off workers as economy dents business

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Dec 4, 2008 | by Anonymous

USS POSCO in Pittsburg is cutting jobs because of the construction slumps in housing and commercial real estate. The steel factory is reducing shifts and has laid off 8.5 percent of its workforce, or about 70 workers, until sometime early in 2009. The timing of their return -- and perhaps how many come back -- depends on improvements in demand for galvanized steel.

The company's tin steel business, used for canned food storage, is doing fine.
