Police find missing Richmond girl safe in Monterey
0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, May 14, 2009 | by Karl Fischer
Richmond police on Thursday afternoon found the 21-year-old woman whom they had thought may have kidnapped her 2-year-old daughter.
The woman, Schylon Stewart, was found in Monterey with the girl, Mayana Williams, who was not injured, said Richmond Detective Sgt. Bisa French.
Police originally had said an unidentified woman picked up the girl and left with her during a church service Wednesday night, apparently to deliver her to her estranged mother, according to police. On Thursday, Stewart said she had picked up the girl.
Stewart called her own parents late Wednesday night and told them she had Mayana and both were safe, French said, but police remained concerned.

Mayana lives with her father and paternal grandmother in Richmond, French said. There is no custody order, but the mother has not been involved in raising the girl, he added.
Police did not arrest Stewart but forwarded the case to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office for review. Police were taking the girl back to her family.
