Scholastic honors -- Walnut Creek Journal, June 18

Amanda Stevie Bergman, daughter of Pat Bergman of Walnut Creek and Rick Bergman of Oakland (both formerly of Lafayette), received a bachelor's degree from Smith College on May 17 with a major in physics. She graduated from Acalanes High School in 2005. Bergman graduated with several honors, including election to the national honor societies Zeta Chapter, Phi Beta Kappa and the Society of Sigma Xi, and she as given departmental highest honors in physics. She graduated with the Latin honor cum laude.

David J. Lew has been selected to receive a $12,000 college scholarship from the ConocoPhillips Dependent Scholarship Program. Lew, a senior at Berean Christian High School in Walnut Creek, is the son of Morgan and Pattie Lew. ConocoPhillips Dependent Scholarship Program is designed to recognize exceptional graduating seniors for their achievements both inside and outside of the classroom. Each recipient will receive $3,000 award, renewable yearly based on scholastic achievement, for a four-year scholarship of $12,000. A total of 399 students applied for scholarships this year. 60 scholarships were awarded.

Melissa Varner graduated from Grove City College with a bachelor of music degree and majored in music education. She is a 2005 graduate of Carondelet High School and the daughter of Diane and John Varner of Alamo.

The following two students from Walnut Creek graduated from Oregon State University on Jude 13. Donald B. Fox, bachelor of arts, business administration and Alexandra C. Stevens, bachelor of science, animal sciences.

Erin K. Coppersmith, daughter of Kevin and Kathleen Coppersmith of Walnut Creek, was awarded a bachelor of arts in liberal studies with a minor in psychology at the 100th commencement ceremony of Sweet Briar College in Virginia. Coppersmith graduated cum laude. As a student at Sweet Briar, Coppersmith was president of the Student Virginia Education Association.

Timothy Woods, of Walnut Creek, was one of 34 Washburn University students recently inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. Woods graduated from Kansas-based Washburn University School of Law May 16 with a juris doctoral degree and a family law certificate.
