HAYWARD -- The Hayward Area Park and Recreation District on Friday will begin showcasing the exhibit "25 Views: A Photographic Journey," featuring work from students looking to enter the world of professional photography.

The annual program displays top work from the 2009 Photographic Portfolio Class at Foothill College in Los Altos, which aims to teach students how to market themselves and pursue a career in photography.

"The exhibit is the culmination of what students have been preparing for," said Kate Jordahl, course instructor and co-founder of the district's PhotoCentral Gallery, which will host the program. "It's a way for us to congratulate them, while also sending them off into the future by sharing their accomplishments."

The students have been exploring a wide range of photographic genres, including commercial, portrait, architecture and collage, Jordahl said.

"All works are very artistic," she said.

In preparing for Friday's launch, students were required to build a portfolio of old and new work. In addition, photographers also were responsible for promoting their own work and the event itself.

"It's a full show away from college, and they get hands-on training working with the gallery staff," Jordahl said. "The experience takes them out of the college situation."
