Peter M. Brown, son of Ken and Janet Brown of Walnut Creek, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in May, after completing the ROTC program. He graduated cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. with a degree in political science.

Following advanced training at Fort Gordon, Ga., he will serve in the Signal Corps at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Brown graduated from Northgate High School in 2004.

Air Force Airman Mon Christian R. Zabala graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Ramoncito Zabala of Lafayette, and a 2005 graduate of Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek.
