Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year: Matt Vaughn of Burlingame
0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Jul 2, 2009 | by Anonymous
Matt Vaughn, Burlingame
Burlingame High swept the Peninsula Athletic League boys and girls track and field championships this season. It was the first championship for the boys since 1996 and the first title for the girls since 1998.
Vaughn, who had coached at Burlingame for 13 years as an assistant and head coach specializing in the hurdles, stepped in as head coach after a one-year absence and guided the Panthers to the first boys and girls PAL team title sweep in school history.
The boys won unexpectedly in a close battle with San Mateo, Westmoor and Woodside. The girls dominated, scoring 125 points to 56 for second-place Carlmont, and in the process earned San Mateo County Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year honors for Vaughn.

Allison Daley was the only double winner for the Burlingame girls, taking the 300 hurdles and the triple jump. Cassie Root won the 100 hurdles, and Amanda Koester captured the high jump. But it was Burlingame's depth that made the win so decisive, as the Panthers won both relays and loaded up on second- and third-place finishes.
