What you love and hate

I love ...

... when I'm volunteering at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek and hear the lullaby being played signifying a baby was just born. That's the sound of hope to me.

-- Chris Dito, Concord

... being a substitute teacher. It is a joy to go into classrooms and witness the awesome miracles that many hardworking teachers have generated.

-- Mary McMahon, Livermore

... when I offer my family salad or dessert and four out of five times they choose salad.

-- Gretchen Kohl, Alameda

I hate "...

... when I am at the gym running on the treadmill and somebody gets on the one next to me smothered in either perfume or cologne. The more they sweat, the more powerful the smell becomes, and the harder it is for me to breathe.

-- Jane O'Hollaren, Fremont

... having just one teeny frustrating box left unfinished in an otherwise completed crossword puzzle and imagining that everyone else in the Bay Area has figured out that one box except me.

-- Catherine E. Cutler, Orinda
