Hayward
Parent resource center: The latest parent resource center on a Hayward campus opened last week at Longwood Elementary School.
As part of a directive by the school board, all campuses eventually will have the facilities, which provide meeting spaces for parents involved in the schools, as well as a place to get information and learn to use the district's computer-based student information system.
Centers are open at many of the elementary and middle schools, while high schools have designated space for the facilities. Contact specific schools for more information.

Essay contest: Nov. 20 is the deadline for submitting an essay for the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual contest for students in grades five through eight.
Contestants should describe how they felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit in Utah, upon the completion the first Transcontinental Railroad. Students should imagine themselves as a settler, Irish or Chinese worker who helped build the railroad or an American Indian whose way of life was impacted by the construction.
Essays selected by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will advance to a state competition, then on to a division contest. The national winner in each grade level will receive a monetary award.
For contest rules and details, call Kristina Ahuja at 510-795- 6343.
